In Cascais, this procession is not very old. Until the 50s was performed the pilgrimage to Our Lady of Guia, now incorporated in this procession. This pilgrimage stemmed from a promise made by the council of Lisbon, in the first quarter of the sixteenth century: “Ms. broke the ravages of the plague that had befallen the city and they come here, to the shrine once a year – on foot first  and than by boat – to venerate it with thanksgiving”. The tradition faded, but the procession of Our Lady of Navigators Guide is still the culmination of the journey by sea.
